About

About the HPC Ecosystems Project

Quick Summary Overview

The HPC Ecosystems Project is an initiative of the Department of Science and Innovation (DSI) of South Africa.

Its mandate is to deploy HPC cyber-infrastructure to partner sites in the HPC Ecosystems Community and to provide HPC System Administrator training in Africa.

TLDR - additional information

Our Vision

In addition to our project mandate of deploying HPC systems and training the Administrators to operate these systems, we strongly believe that the long-term sustainability of this project depends on the wider community and cannot rely on a small team operating from the southern tip of Africa. Accordingly, we are also heavily invested in developing an Africa-wide HPC Community, in particular:
  • Managing an Africa-wide HPC community
  • Facilitating a standard HPC software stack for broader collaboration and community support
  • Instilling HPC best practices and standards
  • HPC curricula for formal training and education.
If you believe that you align with any of the above activities or project scope, please feel free to make contact with the HPC Ecosystems Project!

Our Journey

The HPC Ecosystems Project began ca. 2014 with the CHPC's HPC Ranger Project, and evolved into the HPC Ecosystems Project in 2016, with an expanded mandate and HPC systems pool.

The first systems were deployed locally within South Africa and thereafter additional systems were deployed to African SKA partner countries.

The goal of the initial deployments is to ready partner sites for the introduction of future investments towards advanced HPC cyber-infrastructure.

The HPC Ecosystems Project team has focused on deploying systems and training administrators, but we recognise that these are merely the first steps of a successful cyber-infrastructure deployment, and we are constantly working towards a sustainable and scalable solution to ensure long-term success.

The Benefits

Each member of the HPC Ecosystems Community is able to benefit from:
  • A regional community of partners sharing a common hardware architecture and common software stack.
  • A regional community of partners sharing similar deployment challenges and shared experiences and lessons learned.
  • A common identity within the HPC community that is recognised internationally by partners in other regions.
  • Continuous development and integration of modernised HPC tools from the broader HPC community.
  • Contributing towards best practices and knowledgebase for others to benefit from, in particular with respect to HPC solutions for Resource Constrained Environments.
  • Opportunities to collaborate with regional and global partners on HPC and research initiatives.
